Join COLOURS Blended Intensive Program (BIP) “Food Forward: Green Bites for a Sustainable Urban Future”, an immersive learning experience designed to explore sustainable food systems, urban agriculture, and eco-friendly food production. This Summer School blends online and on-site learning to provide students and lecturers with practical insights into green food initiatives, climate-smart agriculture, and urban sustainability.

Program Overview

Participants will engage with key topics, including:

  • Sustainable agriculture and urban gardening to enhance food security in cities.
  • Food waste reduction and resource efficiency for circular food systems.
  • Local sourcing and biodiversity conservation to promote resilient urban ecosystems.
  • Community engagement and policy support for food justice and equity.
  • Smart farming technologies and innovations for sustainable urban food production.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical applications, participants will explore climate-friendly farming, food security policies, and emerging trends in green food initiatives. The program will emphasize social equity in food access and the role of technology in developing resilient, sustainable food systems.

Objectives and Outcomes

By the end of the Summer School, participants will:

  1. Discuss cutting-edge agricultural techniques, such as vertical farming, hydroponics, aquaponics, and permaculture, and their role in enhancing urban food production.
  2. Identify smart farming technologies, including precision agriculture and IoT applications, to optimize resource use and sustainability.
  3. Analyze the environmental impact of agricultural innovations, focusing on biodiversity, resource conservation, and urban ecosystems.
  4. Explore community engagement initiatives that foster participation in sustainable food practices, social equity, and access to healthy food.
  5. Evaluate the role of food policies and emerging technologies in urban food systems, identifying advocacy opportunities and areas for improvement.

Virtual BIP Component (24-26 June 2025)

The online component introduces key topics in sustainable and circular food production in urban settings. Covered topics include:

  • Ecological aspects of urban agriculture and their role in reducing carbon footprints.
  • Food production and climate change, focusing on adaptation strategies and sustainable practices.
  • Infrastructure for urban agriculture, exploring how cities can integrate green spaces for food production.

Over three days, participants will engage in interactive three-hour sessions, led by university lecturers and industry experts, blending theoretical foundations with practical discussions to ensure a well-rounded learning experience.
